We are starting something exciting, we are opening a "homeschool" here at Jumbo, we have heard the demands for schools with smaller classes and more persoanlisied attention and especially for Primary school.
Why we wanted to offer a "homeschool enviroment"?
Firstly we have had parents asking if we would consider doing homeschooling, as a parent myself it sparked an interest for me and I started to research homeschooling. Typically this is when a parent takes on the responsibility to teach their own children, we want to offer the "homeschool" enviroment to the children as if they were being taught by their parents in the comfort of their home, but with a school aspect with classes and of course the children will be with other children and will still get the social aspect of regular school.
I have many worries being a parent myself, sending my child off to school, if you can't afford a private school you are faced with very little choice, with the added headache of having to go through the registration process which could result in your child not being accepted by the school you really want and put in another school that does not suit your child. Teachers motivation these days are very low with the amount of admin they are expected to do they do not have time to teach. Classes filled to the brim with between 28 - 40 children, I take my hat off to teachers today and I am not sure how they cope with so many children. Homework is another issue I feel it steals time away from the family and causes many fights and unpleasantness in the family, home time is for children to spend much needed time with their parents especially if both parents work. Bullying is the biggest issue in schools today, it can take just 1 horrible experience for your child to be affected and then we seem to be moving our children from 1 school to the next because no one seems to be addressing the bullying issue.
How will our school work?
We want a school that is flexible and gives each child the time they need to understand their work, that is why we chose the Impak currculuim it allows children to move at their own pace and they can not move on until they understand all concepts of the work. We will have smaller classes, 10 per class and teachers will teach, they will not have to worry about anything else but prep work and teaching. We will have a very little to no homework policy, depending on the child, some children might need some extra reading or maths, but it will never be an amount that is too overwhelming. A nice way of looking at homework is to put a zero on each grade so for example Grade 1 children should only have 10 minutes of homework and Grade 2 children 20 minutes and so on and again only if the child needs it. They other thing that we want is flexiability, for example you get an opportunity to take your family overseas or somewhere exciting, you will not be tryed down to "you can only take them when it's school holidays", the Impak currculium allows for the child to take their work with them and of course it opens up a wonderful opportunity for a project, the child must gather all the information about their trip, what they learnt, saw and did and do a project and when they come back give their class mates feedback on what they learnt. We would also like to focus on building confident, resilant and adaptable children, the world is chaning so fast, jobs we have today will no longer exist when our children go out in the big wide world, they are going to have to adapt to jobs changing at a fast pace, it is said that our children will change their profession about 5 times or more in their career, so they will need confidence, relisance and adapatablity.
About the currculium we have chosen Imapk
We chose the Impak currculium for its adaptability, the child can literally work from anywhere. They also have very professional staff on hand to aid tutoring centres with any questions and issues that may arise. Their currciulum also fits in with what the Department of Education offers at school and should your child wish to move to a bigger school enviroment they will be more than prepared for such a move. I always like to hear from the horses mouth, so if you would like to look at their website, call or email any questions you might have please visit their website www.impak.co.za, you can click on the Tutor section.
